  5. Things you need to know to keep safe on the road in the age of Corona Virus

More than 5 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported worldwide, including over 328,000 deaths, making it more essential than ever for individuals to slow down the spread of the virus.

For you to be part of the solution of saving lives, you must stay at home and observe all the safety measures advised by the experts. Although for most us, we still need to go out to buy groceries, medicines, and other necessities and some are even travelling for work. This is the reason why we should be mindful of the protocols especially those who need to be on the road daily.

As restrictions start to ease over the month of June, it is important to be vigilant in looking after your health so that you can concentrate on the road.  It is anticipated that there will be more cars on the road than ever before due to not only the social distancing requirements on public transport but the fear around being in close quarters with large numbers of people.

For Victoria, we are being warned to concentrate on our driving because according to Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy, the angst and stress in the community, can diminish drivers’ focus on road rules and safety. To avoid accidents and contracting virus, the police will be more visible and still be conducting regular preliminary breath testing (PBT). The Chief Health Officer also advised everyone, especially those on the road to practice good hygiene, washing of hands, not touching any public surfaces, covering mouth when sneezing or coughing and avoid going out if you are unwell.

Everyone who is on the frontline: healthcare, food, and medical personnel will need to take extra precautions since they are always even before, during, and after the pandemic.

To ensure your protection in these tough times, here are some tips you can apply while on the road:

1.Make sure you boost your Immune System by taking vitamins/supplements and practicing a healthy lifestyle.

Our immune system is our defense network against potentially harmful bacteria and viruses. When our body detects an intruder, it will instantly fight back effectively and efficiently. To take care of our immune system we should be mindful that we are having adequate sleep for the regeneration of our cells, we also need to make sure that we are getting enough nutrients that’s why a healthy food choice and taking supplements are also highly recommended. It is also best to exercise because it is the main stress-booster and can contribute largely to our wellbeing.

2.Avoid ride-shares.

It is the best time not to choose any ride-sharing especially on Uber.

Whether you are a driver or a passenger, you could protect yourself by avoiding touching any surfaces, bringing your sanitizer with you and making sure you are not able to avoid spreading the virus to anyone.

3.Be mindful in following the latest guidelines set forth by the WHO and your local health authorities

Be up to date by watching or reading news about the pandemic. It is also best to involve your family or even share some necessary information you know to your friends online. We learn that COVID-19 has a severe impact on our mortality and economy, that’s why it is best to take our part as concerned individuals and cooperate with the government on their pursuit to suppress Covid-19.

4.Bring your cleaning supplies wherever you go.

You can protect yourself by wiping a shopping trolley or before holding a petrol pump. You can also do it before you open any doors or any handle while running errands. It is still best to wash your hands with soap but if you don’t have access to it, always bring your sanitizer with you.
